FreeRADIUS for ISPs — FAQ
What is FreeRADIUS and why do ISPs need it?+
FreeRADIUS is the most widely deployed open-source RADIUS server. ISPs use it to authenticate PPPoE/Hotspot subscribers, authorise the right speed/IP profile, and account for session time and data usage. ISPbills ships with FreeRADIUS pre-configured so you do not have to install or maintain it separately.
Does ISPbills replace MikroTik User Manager?+
Yes. The bundled FreeRADIUS removes any need for User Manager. ISPbills handles RADIUS clients (NAS), check & reply attributes, accounting, online-user tracking and CoA disconnect natively.
Does it support CoA and disconnect packets?+
Yes. ISPbills sends RFC 5176 Change-of-Authorisation and Disconnect-Request packets — used for live speed changes, plan upgrades and instant suspension when a subscriber is unpaid.
Can I add custom RADIUS attributes per subscriber or package?+
Yes. Each subscriber and package supports custom check/reply attributes (e.g. Mikrotik-Rate-Limit, Framed-Pool, Acct-Interim-Interval) — pushed automatically when the customer authenticates.
Does FreeRADIUS work with Cisco, Ubiquiti and OLTs as well?+
Yes. Any vendor that speaks RADIUS works — Cisco IOS, Ubiquiti EdgeRouter/UniFi, Huawei/ZTE OLTs, Cambium and 802.1X switches. ISPbills auto-configures the NAS entry once and accounting flows into the same dashboard.
